There is a new style in the Martial Arts Community. This new style is titled “Reality Based Self Defense”. Also known as RBSD, Reality Based Self Defense systems base themselves on situations that occur in your everyday life. RBSD also takes into consideration environment, using weather and low light areas as two large factors. Most of the skills and techniques learned in RBSD revolve around awareness, mindset and re-action, and preforming techniques that use simple gross motor skills. This makes it easy to learn whether you are a novice or advanced. Military and law enforcement use these types of training methods because they sometimes have very little time to teach the criteria. So they rely on simple but highly effective gross motor skill movements and strikes.
Unlike your Traditional Martial Arts (TMA) schools that wear martial arts GI’s, RBSD training is based on real events. When will you be wearing a GI outside the dojo? So why train in one? RBSD trains in your every day street or work clothes. Keeping it as real as possible during training will result in a much easier task should you be confronted by an attacker or put in a bad situation. Training is also often informal and in a more relaxed environment. There are no belts or ranking systems, so everyone is equal.
RBSD trains using real life scenarios and psychology as its main focal point. We act out roles and situations that go on in our lives each and everyday. Replica edged weapons, guns and sticks are also used in training. You are then faced with scenarios that include multiple attackers, force on force fighting and high stress environments. All this while building your combative mindset and intent.
