One of the most neglected aspects of the self defense world is psychological warfare and preemptive striking. What is being taught at pretty much every school around my location are traditional martial arts where you block, THEN strike type of movement. Over thousands of years the human body feels that it should not make the first attempt to hurt, until it is threatened in a way that force is necessary for protection and survival. This is a very bad idea considering what will happen naturally to the human body during the first five seconds of a violent encounter. “If you wait, it might be to late”. If you go into defense mode right away you are in a world of danger. Which means the only other approach is.......offense.
This video covers the verbal confrontation range of an altercation. If you can not talk the person down and the situation starts to escalate you will need to use psychology against your attacker in order to give you that precise timing for your initial attack. This is called a “preemptive strike”. These types of strikes are VERY effective, stealthy and will help pave the way for your secondary attacks and give you the opportunity to win the confrontation or get to safety.
